A steam trap is one of the most important devices used in steam systems with the automation of condensate and air removal and elimination of non-condensable gasses in steam traps, not losing live steam. The steam trap enables sound operation of a steam system wherein condensate can seep out of the system without letting live steam seep into it; its working is on the basis of differences in density between steam and condensate. For example, in a float steam trap, the accumulation of condensate raises a float that in turn raises a valve on the outside to release the condensate but retain the steam inside. 

The thermostatic steam trap uses the factor of temperature when a temperature-sensitive element expands with steam heating and closes the valve, while the effect of cooling by condensate makes it contract so that it opens and lets out the condensate.
